NHL Trade Rumors: Could Sabres Swing A Big Trade?

According to Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic, the Buffalo Sabres could be poised to make a big in-season trade, especially if they remain in playoff contention as the March 7 trade deadline approaches.

With over $7 million in salary cap space and a deep pool of prospects, GM Kevyn Adams has the flexibility to pursue a top-six forward—an area of need that went unaddressed during the offseason.

Fairburn notes that "the Sabres were poking around the trade market for a top-six forward throughout the summer," and he believes Adams could take an aggressive approach to bolster the roster if the right opportunity arises.

One key trade chip could be Jordan Greenway, who is in the final year of his contract.

Fairburn suggests that Greenway and other roster players in similar contract situations might be used to bring in high-impact talent.

The Sabres' mix of cap space and expendable assets makes them well-positioned to act, and there has already been speculation linking them to Philadelphia Flyers forward Joel Farabee.

Depending on how both teams perform, Farabee could become a key target for Buffalo.

While the Sabres have been focused on building for the future, the urgency to end their 13-year playoff drought has increased.

Fairburn believes Adams has the resources to make a bold move, but much will depend on how the season unfolds.

If Buffalo stays in the playoff hunt, Fairburn concludes, "a significant Sabres trade at some point seems likely," signaling that Adams may be ready to swing big if the situation calls for it.
