NHL Trade Rumors: Metropolitan Team Tried Trading For John Gibson Last Offseason

The Carolina Hurricanes made a serious attempt to trade for Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson this past offseason, according to Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star

Although the deal ultimately fell through, Kypreos reports that the Hurricanes’ pursuit was fueled by their desire to bolster their goaltending depth.

With Gibson now nearing a return from an emergency appendectomy, Kypreos suggests, "Interest in Gibson could heat up again," particularly given Carolina’s previous efforts to land the 31-year-old netminder.

Gibson, who has a $6.4 million AAV contract through 2026-27, remains a significant trade chip for the Ducks.

Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek is reportedly open to retaining part of Gibson’s salary if it means securing a top asset in return.

As the season unfolds, Kypreos notes that the Hurricanes and other goalie-needy teams, such as Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, and Pittsburgh Penguins, could revisit trade talks.

Gibson has been Anaheim’s mainstay in net for nearly a decade, holding franchise records in saves (13,294) and games played by a goaltender (477).

However, his recent performance is similar to the team’s overall struggles, with a career-low .888 save percentage and a 3.54 goals-against average during the 2023-24 season.
