No Extension Coming for Dallas Stars’ Jamie Benn During The Season

Nearly half of the Dallas Stars roster are pending free agents after the 2024-25 season, and not many are as notable as longtime captain Jamie Benn. But the team is not looking to talk extension with their 15-year veteran during the upcoming campaign.

As reported by Lia Assimakopoulos in the Dallas Morning News, Stars GM Jim Nill says that, per Benn's wishes, they will not be discussing a new contract during the season.

I asked him (this summer), ‘Do you want to start talking about two years down the road yet?’ He was very clear: ‘Jim, I just want to win this year and make decisions from there.’ He’s all in with the team. It’s a little bit of Joe Pavelski’s theory of wait and see what are the needs of the team and how can I help out?

The 11-time 20-goal scorer is heading into his age-35 season, and he just wants to wait and see how the season goes and how the future looks.

But re-signing Benn eventually is looked at as a "no-brainer" by Nill.

“My plan, as long as I’m the GM here, he’s going to be a Dallas Star,” Nill said. “He’s earned that right. I think the first thing is are they still performing at the level they should be? And Jamie’s done that.”

Benn has been excellent the past couple of seasons as he enters his mid-30s, and his durability is especially stunning. He hasn't missed a single game for three straight years, and has played over 70 games in 11 of his 15 seasons, and just missed with 69 games on two other occasions.

Last year, the captain finished with 21 goals and 60 points along with a plus/minus rating of +8, even though he played a career-low (since his rookie season) of just 15:07 per night.
