Report: Jake Oettinger "Not In A Rush" To Sign Contract Extension

According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger is in no hurry to sign a contract extension as he approaches restricted free agency next summer.

LeBrun notes that Oettinger and his camp, led by agent Ben Hankinson, are likely taking a wait-and-see approach, allowing the season to play out before engaging in serious negotiations.

This strategy would give Oettinger a chance to further elevate his value, especially after fellow Team USA goaltender Jeremy Swayman set a new market standard with an eight-year, $66 million deal with the Boston Bruins.

“He’s got the Swayman deal in his back pocket now, so perhaps this goes to after the season,” LeBrun remarked, highlighting Oettinger's leverage.

While Stars GM Jim Nill is expected to address Oettinger’s contract during the season, the timing of these talks is delicate, as Dallas also faces negotiations with other key RFAs like forward Wyatt Johnston.

With Swayman’s $8.25 million annual salary providing a strong comparison, Oettinger’s camp is content to be patient.

“Oettinger has a chance to put up a great year here, give himself even more leverage in talks,” said LeBrun, suggesting the goaltender may wait until after the season to secure the most favorable terms.
