The Canadiens have $6.5 million in current cap space and have a slew of draft picks and prospects Hughes can wheel and deal from. While Montreal isn't expected to be a playoff contender this season, Hughes is trying his best to fast-track their rebuild/re-tool and bring in some talent that can help immediately.
Ivan Provorov of the Columbus Blue Jackets is reportedly a name that's out there available on the trade market. However, he's a pending unrestricted free agent so it's hard to say at this point if Hughes would have interest in that, or if he's looking for a defenseman with term on his contract.
The Canadiens blue line is banged up right now with injuries. The Habs sit with a 2-4-1 record, good for last in the Atlantic Division. Perhaps Hughes should consider making a deal, sooner than later.
