Report: Shesterkin Turns Down Massive Record-Setting Offer From Rangers

We had been hearing throughout the summer that New York Rangers star goaltender Igor Shesterkin was looking to break the bank and become the highest-paid goalie in hockey history.

According to insider Kevin Weekes, the Rangers gave him that opportunity with their latest contract offer, but Shesterkin turned down the massive $88 million deal.

The eight-year offer at $11 million AAV would have moved Shesterkin past the current record-holder for goalies, Carey Price, whose deal was worth $10.5 million annually.

We had received reports over the offseason that Shesterkin was looking for a contract that would smash the record, with a $12 million per year price tag, and this latest report indicates that that just might be the case.

He is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season as his 4-year, $5.67 million AAV deal comes to an end.

The 28-year-old was the Vezina Trophy winner in 2021-22 and has a career .921 save percentage with a 2.43 goals-against average. He has started an average of 55 games per season over the past three years on Broadway and has posted a career mark of 135-59-17 over his five NHL seasons.

Last year, the Russian-born keeper led the Rangers to the President's Trophy with the best record in the league, as he went 36-17-2 with a .912 Sv% and a 2.58 GAA.
