Seattle Kraken Reward Joey Daccord With Big Extension

The Seattle Kraken's goalie of the present and future emerged last season. Joey Daccord became the starter for the Kraken last season, playing 50 games and recording a 2.46 GAA, .916 SV%, and three shutouts. This led to the team extending him for five more years at $5 million AAV.

Daccord is in the second and final year of a two-year, $1.2 million AAV deal. Interestingly enough after what happened last season, the Kraken decided to go with Philipp Grubauer in the first game of the season against the St. Louis Blues. That resulted in a loss and a sub-.900 SV%, so you can count on Daccord making his season debut in game two.

Daccord really hit his stride at 27 years old and if there is no buyout on the near horizon for Grubauer, the two will be sharing the net for the next three seasons. Expect Daccord to win the starting role in Seattle again this season.

The Kraken are on the rise and need a goalie who is improving with them and can handle the net. Daccord proved he can do that last season and was awarded with five more years in the newest expansion city. He had started just 15 games in the NHL over the five previous years before starting 46 last season.

Daccord got his opportunity with an injury to Grubauer, but he won't need an injury to secure the number one job in 2024-25. There is a gap between the level of play of Daccord and Grubauer and the Kraken are trying to bounce back and get into the playoffs this season.
