Vegas Golden Knights Sign Shea Theodore To Long-Term Extension

The Vegas Golden Knights have signed defenseman Shea Theodore to a seven-year, $51.975 million contract extension, locking him in through the 2031-32 NHL season with an average annual value (AAV) of $7.425 million.

The deal keeps one of the team's cornerstone players in Vegas and avoids what could have been a highly competitive free agency pursuit next summer.

Theodore, 29, has been with the franchise since its inaugural season in 2017-18, playing a big role in their 2023 Stanley Cup championship and setting the franchise record for points by a defenseman with 296 in 450 games.

General Manager Kelly McCrimmon emphasized Theodore’s importance to the team’s success, stating, “Shea has been an integral part of our team since day one. His skill, leadership, and ability to perform in crucial moments make him invaluable to our roster.”

The 2024-25 season is off to a strong start for Theodore, who has already tallied seven points in six games, ranking among the NHL's top defensemen.

Despite injuries that limited him to 47 games last season, Theodore posted a career-high 0.89 points per game, proving his offensive impact from the blue line.

The extension, considered somewhat of a "hometown discount" given Theodore’s projected market value of over $9 million annually, reflects his commitment to Vegas’ long-term success.

With a rising salary cap, Theodore’s cap-friendly deal ensures the team’s defensive core remains strong as they aim to stay competitive in the Western Conference.
