Blue Jackets Rumors: 3 'Bad Contract' Trade Candidates for Columbus
Multiple reports have surfaced that the Columbus Blue Jackets are trying to make a trade, and are open to taking on some 'bad' money, if there's assets involved as sweeteners. GM Don Waddell has $24 million in cap space to work with and could easily take on an expensive contract, especially if it means a top prospect or potentially a second-round pick is included.
Here's three potential trade candidates the Blue Jackets could consider:
Justin Holl, Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings defense corps is in shambles and one of their weaknesses this season. Holl has appeared in seven games, recording one assist. Holl is signed through next season at $3.4 million against the cap. He does own a 10-team no-trade clause, which GM Steve Yzerman may be regretting handing out. Holl could be a candidate for the Blue Jackets, however it's unknown if Columbus is on his no-fly zone.
Andre Burakovsky, Seattle Kraken
Burakovsky owns a $5.5 million cap hit for this season, and the next two. Like Holl, he does own a no-trade clause which protects him from 10 teams. So far this season, Burakovsky has yet to score, recording six assists in 12 games. Last season, Burakovsky scored seven goals and recorded just 16 points in 49 games so he's becoming an underwhelming forward for his price tag.
Bryan Rust, Pittsburgh Penguins
Rust isn't going anywhere this season, as he holds a no-movement clause, however once the offseason hits, Rust has no trade protection left on his contract and three more years at $5.1 million against the cap. The Penguins will want more flexibility next summer, considering they are going to need to re-tool their lineup to get back into playoff contention. While Rust isn't likely dealt before March's deadline, he's a candidate for early in the offseason to be moved.
