Blues & Hurricanes Could Make Massive Goalie Trade

A lot of signs point to St. Louis Blues' goalie Jordan Binnington being traded by the end of his contract that has two years left on it at $6 million AAV.

Joel Hofer is capable of taking over and whether Binnington asks for a trade or the team feels it's time to move on from him if they can, there could be one interested party that takes a swing.

The Carolina Hurricanes are going to miss Frederik Andersen for an extended period of time. This could very well mean most of the remainder of the season or the entirety of it. Pyotr Kochetkov is a very capable goalie, but hasn't been given the reins as the full-time starter yet due to the Hurricanes bringing back Andersen for another season.

It looks like it's Kochetkov's net for the time being with Spencer Martin backing him up, but the Hurricanes seem to like their tandem system in net. This could lead to the team inquiring on Binnington according to Jimmy Murphy. Binnington's cap hit would be manageable and the goaltending would only take up $8 million per season (with Kochetkov at $2 million AAV for two more years) if the Hurricanes were to make a trade for the Blues' starter and take all $6 million AAV.

The Hurricanes are a top team in the league and the Blues are out of a playoff spot. Both teams' spots in the standings could lead to a trade this season even though players with multiple years left on their contracts aren't exactly easy to move during a season. The Hurricanes are still a very good team despite being doubted after a number of off-season losses. They appear to still be in their window to win and it makes sense to upgrade to recoup some of the losses from the offseason and with Andersen.
