Canadiens Rumors: Montreal Could Extend David Savard

The Montreal Canadiens could consider a contract extension for veteran defenseman David Savard, if he's willing to sign a short-term deal at a lower cost, according to Eric Engels of Sportsnet.

“The young defensemen need to be put in those spots,” Engels noted, speaking on elevating players like Arber Xhekaj, Justin Barron, and Lane Hutson, while recognizing that Savard’s mentorship could be pivotal.

An extension for Savard would likely be short-term and depend on his willingness to accept a more limited role, balancing his veteran presence with the team’s evolving needs.

Head coach Martin St. Louis, looking to instill greater accountability and structure, could see value in Savard’s steadying influence as the Canadiens shift focus from pure development to a mindset of learning to win.

“We’re in transition as a team, and I’m in transition as a coach,” St. Louis stated, noting his push to build a competitive edge in Montreal’s lineup.

Over his four seasons in Montreal, Savard has recorded 12 goals and 53 assists for 65 total points, a -44 plus/minus rating, 275 hits, and 502 blocked shots across 196 games played.
