Canadiens Rumors: Montreal Eyeing Jim Montgomery?

A rumor is circulating that the Montreal Canadiens could target former Boston Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery, as noted by Sportsnet’s Luke Fox

Montgomery, a bilingual Montreal native and Jack Adams Award winner, was recently fired by the Bruins despite an impressive 120-41-23 record over his tenure.

His ties to Canadiens GM Kent Hughes and VP Jeff Gorton, combined with Montreal’s disappointing NHL-worst .353 points percentage, have fueled speculation about his potential arrival.

“The Canadiens are keeping an eye on Jim Montgomery,” Fox noted, emphasizing that this is a theory rather than a confirmed plan.

While current head coach Martin St. Louis remains under contract, the Canadiens’ struggles have raised questions about the team’s direction.

The situation recalls 2017, when Claude Julien was fired by Boston and immediately hired by Montreal. Journalist Renaud Lavoie highlighted the growing buzz: “His name was already circulating while he was still employed by the Bruins, so imagine now that he’s a free agent.”

Fox also suggested the Canadiens could consider Montgomery for a mentorship role or an addition to their hockey operations team, even if an immediate coaching change seems unlikely.

With Montgomery’s dismissal and Montreal’s management looking for answers, the rumor is gaining traction.

Whether as a future head coach or an advisor, Montgomery’s connections and track record make him a interesting option for the Canadiens as they work through a tough season.
