Canadiens' Savard Is A Player Oilers Could Look At Acquiring

The Edmonton Oilers are starting to figure it out and are climbing the standings, but there is still some work to be done to this roster to help bring them a Stanley Cup.

The Oilers lost a few solid defensemen this past off-season and have been rotating a trio on the second and third pairing along the right side this season. Between Ty Emberson, Troy Stecher, and Travis Dermott, Edmonton is going to need to add another body to that right side to bolster it for a run. This is where a team like the Montreal Canadiens come in.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period said that the Oilers could be looking to add a player of David Savard's caliber this season.

The Canadiens have Savard on an expiring contract and will most likely be moving on from him. While he is one of few veterans on the back-end filled with young talent, there's no guarantee he re-signs and it is a 34-year-old or a player who should help the team win for many years down the line.

Savard's name has come up a lot in trade conversations over the past year as he very well could've been moved if Montreal was willing last season as well. He is a defense-first veteran with tons of experience. He is capable of playing top-4 minutes, shoots right handed, and is physical, tough, and blocks shots.

The Oilers need help on the penalty kill and with 45 shots blocked in 17 games this season, Savard would be a great addition to play beside someone like Darnell Nurse who is looking better this season. With an addition like this to the back-end, the Oilers could find themselves right back in the mix deep in the playoffs.

Savard won't be that cheap to come by, but the Oilers have some assets that could be of interest. He would only be a rental anyways and Edmonton may not need the Canadiens to retain any salary depending on their cap situation later in the season.
