Flames Rumors: Update On Andrei Kuzmenko's Future In Calgary

Andrei Kuzmenko’s future with the Calgary Flames is increasingly uncertain, as the winger approaches unrestricted free agency next July without any extension talks underway, reports Steve MacFarlane of The Hockey News

Kuzmenko, once a high-scoring asset with 39 goals for the Vancouver Canucks in 2022-23, has struggled to maintain consistency with the Flames, which has led to his name surfacing on insiders’ trade lists.

Flames head coach Ryan Huska recently benched Kuzmenko in the third period of a 3-0 win over the New Jersey Devils, explaining, “He wasn’t moving his feet all that much.”

In response, Kuzmenko displayed renewed intensity in a subsequent matchup against the Edmonton Oilers, contributing energy and playmaking to the Flames' power play, despite extending his scoreless streak to four games.

Although relegated to the fourth line, Kuzmenko showed a lot of the hustle and creativity needed to stay competitive, signaling he received the message from his benching.

The 28-year-old remains a popular figure in the locker room, where his playful demeanor is well-regarded, but his inconsistent performances threaten his standing with the Flames and may affect his market value as he heads toward free agency.

A strong second half could either bolster his trade appeal or reinforce his case for a new deal, potentially with Calgary.

Whether he remains a Flame or seeks new opportunities next summer, Kuzmenko’s challenge will be to recapture the scoring touch that saw him net 74 points just two seasons ago.
