Insider: Trade talks heating up around Rangers' Kaapo Kakko
After being selected second overall at the 2019 NHL Draft, Kaapo Kakko's tenure as a New York Ranger could be coming to an end.
According to TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger, Kakko is a player who's name has resurfaced on the trade block and it sounds like talks have intensified in a major way recently. Kakko is a pending restricted free agent who earns $2.4 million against the cap this season.
Unfortunately things haven't quite worked out for Kakko in New York, while there's been some streaky performances and certainly some 'moments', the Finnish forward has lacked consistency and it's a big reason why GM Chris Drury is likely willing to part with his former top pick, for the right price.
Kakko's recorded 12 points in 21 games so far this season and with K'Andre Miller and Igor Shesterkin also pending free agents, Drury is likely looking for either a proven NHLer he can insert into his top-9 for Kakko, or a up-and-coming forward who will be on an entry level deal.
There's been multiple reports that Kakko isn't the only Ranger available. Both Jacob Trouba and Chris Kreider have been linked to trade talks, and it's certainly starting to feel like there's a big trade brewing in New York.
