Kraken Rumors: 5 Pending UFAs Becoming Trade Candidates

The Seattle Kraken, currently tied for a wildcard spot in the Western Conference with a 10-9-1 record, face a tight stretch as the season progresses.

If the team falls out of playoff contention, management could turn its focus to maximizing returns on five pending unrestricted free agents (UFAs) drawing league-wide interest.

Forwards Yanni Gourde, Brandon Tanev, and Daniel Sprong, along with defensemen William Borgen and Josh Mahura, are all in the final year of their contracts and could become valuable trade chips for playoff-bound teams, according to The Fourth Period.

Among the group, Gourde has generated the most attention, with Kraken GM Ron Francis already fielding inquiries, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.

A two-time Stanley Cup champion, Gourde’s leadership and playoff pedigree make him a coveted asset, though his 23-team no-trade list could limit options.

Tanev, a fan favorite in Seattle, offers energy and grit that appeals to contenders, but his 10-team no-trade list and the Kraken’s emotional connection to him may complicate any move.

Francis’s flexibility to retain salary on up to three players this season could further bolster returns for top assets like Gourde and Tanev.

The remaining UFAs—Sprong, Borgen, and Mahura—bring additional value with their affordability.

Sprong’s offensive skill, Borgen’s steady defensive presence, and Mahura’s ability to fill multiple roles make them attractive depth pieces for teams looking to solidify their rosters.
