NHL Trade Rumors: 4 Defensemen Who Could Be Traded By March 7 Deadline

Chris Johnston of The Athletic has named four defensemen likely to be dealt ahead of the NHL's March 7 trade deadline, each offering different benefits to teams with defensive needs.

Ivan Provorov of the Columbus Blue Jackets tops the list, as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

“The Columbus Blue Jackets will almost certainly move [Provorov] ahead of the trade deadline,” Johnston notes, making him one of the most closely watched players this season.

With his experience and reliable play on the left side, Provorov is expected to draw strong interest from playoff-bound teams looking for immediate defensive support.

For teams seeking more than a rental, Anaheim’s Cam Fowler and Philadelphia’s Rasmus Ristolainen present longer-term options.

Fowler, who is signed through the 2025-26 season with a $6.5 million average annual value, could appeal to teams wanting stability on the blue line beyond this year.

However, Johnston suggests Anaheim may need to retain some salary to make a deal more feasible.

Similarly, Ristolainen brings two more years at $5.1 million AAV, though his performance inconsistencies may deter some teams unless Philadelphia adjusts the financial terms.

Rounding out Johnston’s list is Cody Ceci of the San Jose Sharks, whose expiring contract makes him a prime rental candidate.

With San Jose in rebuild mode, Ceci’s status as a reliable right-shot defenseman should attract contenders looking for experienced depth without a long-term commitment.

Johnston anticipates that Provorov and Ceci, both on the verge of free agency, will see high demand from playoff-bound teams, while Fowler and Ristolainen could appeal to clubs focused on securing longer-term defensive assets.
