NHL Trade Rumors: Canadiens "Taking Calls" On Several Players

The Montreal Canadiens are fielding calls on several players with expiring contracts as NHL trade activity begins to heat up ahead of the March trade deadline.

Among the names drawing significant interest are forwards Jake Evans, Christian Dvorak, and Joel Armia, along with veteran defenseman David Savard.

Jake Evans, in particular, stands out as an appealing option with his affordable $1.75 million cap hit, while Savard’s leadership and experience on the blue line make him a valuable target for teams seeking playoff depth.

According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the Canadiens are “willing to make moves whether it’s now, February, or March,” with GM Kent Hughes prepared to retain salary on one more contract if needed to facilitate deals.

Montreal’s willingness to entertain offers comes as they face a roster logjam, with Patrik Laine and Rafaël Harvey-Pinard nearing returns and prospects like Joshua Roy and Emil Heineman carving out roles.

To resolve the congestion, the team may need to waive depth players such as Michael Pezzetta or Harvey-Pinard, signaling a commitment to prioritizing youth over veterans.

Currently sitting at the bottom of the NHL standings, the Canadiens are expected to act sooner rather than later, aiming to capitalize on the trade value of players who could bolster playoff-bound teams.

"If somebody presents something now, I can’t see a scenario where Kent Hughes doesn’t take a look at it,” Pagnotta added, emphasizing the team’s proactive approach.

While the Canadiens’ struggles on the ice have caused frustration—evidenced by a recent team summit called by head coach Martin St. Louis—the organization remains focused on long-term planning.
