NHL Trade Rumors: Insider Lists Two Fits For John Gibson

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic has linked Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson to the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche as potential trade destinations, provided Anaheim is willing to retain up to 50% of his $6.4 million annual cap hit through 2026-27.

With a retained salary reducing Gibson’s cap hit to $3.2 million, LeBrun argues he could become an attractive option for contending teams seeking goaltending depth.

Former NHL goalie Jamie McLennan echoed this sentiment, stating, “If he becomes a $3.2 million goalie with Anaheim keeping half, jeez, he looks good,” emphasizing Gibson’s raw talent and the potential for a resurgence in the right environment.

The Hurricanes appear to be the more plausible fit, as they deal with uncertainty surrounding Frederik Andersen’s long-term health.

LeBrun reports that Carolina has internally discussed Gibson, noting that their elite defensive structure could help reinvigorate his career.

“Every goalie sees his stats improve in Carolina,” LeBrun explained, adding that Gibson’s arrival could address the Hurricanes' recurring playoff struggles in net if he regains form.

With Anaheim open to salary retention and Gibson reportedly motivated for a fresh start, a deal with Carolina may hinge on the Hurricanes' willingness to meet Anaheim’s asking price.

While the Avalanche have also been mentioned as a potential destination, LeBrun sees a trade to Colorado as less likely.

Despite their defensive struggles and league-worst goals-against ranking, Colorado’s management remains confident in their current tandem led by Alexandar Georgiev and is hesitant to add Gibson’s term to an already tight cap situation.
