NHL Trade Rumors: Senators Linked To Blue Jackets' Jordan Harris

Julian McKenzie of The Athletic believes the Ottawa Senators should prioritize acquiring a "penalty-killing, middle-pairing defenseman" to bolster their blue line and improve their playoff prospects.

While the young pairing of Tyler Kleven and Jacob Bernard-Docker has shown promise, McKenzie suggests the Senators lack the depth and veteran presence needed to address defensive lapses under pressure.

He emphasized the importance of finding a player who can anchor the third pairing but step into a larger role when necessary, noting, “If Staios had his way, I think he’d want a penalty-killing, middle-pairing rearguard… those don’t grow on trees.”

Among the trade options, McKenzie highlighted Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Jordan Harris as a strong candidate.

Harris, 24, was acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in the Patrik Laine trade but has struggled to fit into Columbus's plans.

Described as a "decent skater" with potential as a versatile third-pairing defenseman, Harris could address Ottawa's need for better defensive structure and help them manage zone exits under pressure.

McKenzie believes Harris’s relative youth and upside align with Ottawa’s needs, making him an interesting trade target for GM Steve Staios.

Improving defensive depth and addressing the salary cap are critical for the Senators as they push for their first playoff berth since 2017.

McKenzie argues that adding a player like Harris, who offers versatility and experience, could alleviate Ottawa’s struggles in critical moments while stabilizing their penalty kill.

With difficulty maintaining defensive consistency, McKenzie views a move for Harris as a “buy-low” opportunity that could make a significant impact on the Senators' postseason aspirations.
