Penguins Rumors: 3 Potential Trade Destinations for Lars Eller

The Pittsburgh Penguins are off to a tough start to the year, posting a 4-7-1 record through their first 12 games. If the Penguins don't turn things around in a hurry, expect to see a fire sale from President Kyle Dubas, as he'll likely be open to several trades, including all of their pending free agents.

One player to watch is veteran forward Lars Eller. Eller will be in high demand for contending teams, here's three potential destination for the 35-year-old:

Washington Capitals

The Capitals appear to be a playoff team this season as Alex Ovechkin has shown no signs of slowing down. The team is very familiar with Eller, who spent parts of seven seasons in Washington, including winning a Stanley Cup in 2018. Eller is owed $2.4 million and currently the Caps have $3 million in cap space. It's rare to see the Pens and Caps make a trade, but this could be one both sides entertain.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avs are looking for help up front and Eller could provide them a middle-six option and a depth piece come playoff time. The veteran forward spent half a season with the Avs in 2022-23 and unfortunately in seven playoff games, didn't record a point. Would Colorado consider a reunion? Expect to see the Penguins retain some money when moving Eller as it will drive up the price a touch, and give the acquiring team a chance to maintain as much cap flexibility as possible.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets are the surprise of the season so far and look for GM Kevin Cheveldayoff to be interested in adding at some point this season. The Jets have shown in the past they don't mind spending on rentals and Eller would give them more depth down the middle, especially among their bottom six. Eller scored 15 goals last season and still has more offensive upside than many people give him credit for. It's just about finding the right situation.
