Report: "Absurd" Chatter Between Canucks & Sabres

Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News recently addressed what he called “some absurd chatter” surrounding trade speculation between the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks involving defenseman Bowen Byram.

Harrington was quick to shut down the rumors, noting that Sabres GM Kevyn Adams is focused on bolstering the team’s depth, not trading away core pieces.

Byram, who has been promoted to Buffalo’s top pairing alongside Rasmus Dahlin, is a big part of the Sabres' future. “Byram is a critical piece of the Sabres’ blue line,” Harrington stated, highlighting his strong start to the season with 11 points in 18 games.

The trade chatter reportedly originated from Vancouver’s ongoing search for a puck-moving defenseman to stabilize their top-four, a glaring need after defensive struggles last season.

TSN’s Darren Dreger added that while Adams is not actively shopping Byram, some teams, likely including Vancouver, have expressed interest.

The Canucks’ potential appeal lies in Byram’s ties to British Columbia, where he's from and played junior hockey with the Vancouver Giants.

However, Harrington dismissed these ideas as unrealistic, arguing that the Sabres are unlikely to part with such a promising young player, particularly given his offensive upside and growing role on the team.

While the Canucks' need for defensive help is pressing, Harrington suggested they might have to look elsewhere.

“Any deal involving Byram would demand a significant return, likely established NHL players, which Vancouver is ill-positioned to offer,” he explained.

He noted that Buffalo views Byram as a cornerstone of their blue line, making a trade highly improbable. Instead, Harrington speculated the Sabres could focus on complementary acquisitions, such as Nashville’s Gustav Nyquist, as they gear up for a playoff push.

For now, Byram remains firmly entrenched in Buffalo’s plans, with no signs of movement on the horizon.
