St. Louis Blues Get Bad News on Philip Broberg

Philip Broberg has so far been more of a revelation for the St. Louis Blues than even they thought when they signed him to a big offer sheet from the Edmonton Oilers this past summer.

Unfortunately, his rise to prominence has been put on hold, we've learned, by four to six weeks due to a lower-body injury suffered on the weekend.

While avoiding a worst-case scenario, it's still a brutal break for the young blueliner, and the Blues. Broberg, who signed a two-year, $4.58 million AAV contract as a restricted free agent, has registered nine points in 12 games for St. Louis, playing 19:34 per night.

Head coach Drew Bannister, however, is looking at the timeline as good news.

“I’m happy that he’s going to be back. It could have been worse, but it isn’t,” Bannister said. “He was playing really good hockey, and now it’s just let’s get him back on the ice, back to game speed, and that’s going to take a little bit of time, but the player himself is really happy (with the prognosis).

"We’re disappointed it’s four to six weeks, but it could have been a lot worse."

Broberg was injured in a collision along the boards Saturday night, when Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner inadvertently fell on Broberg's leg, causing it to land awkwardly.

Broberg was acquired from the Oilers on the Blues' offer sheets along with fellow RFA Dylan Holloway.

Broberg was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, and only got into 12 regular season games last year for the Oilers, though he began to show his immense potential with a solid 10-game run late in the Stanley Cup playoffs on their run to the Finals.
