There's no word yet on when the injury occurred, as Matthews played 22:12 in their overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild on Sunday, without any apparent incident.
Insider Elliotte Friedman suggests this might be something that’s been ongoing for a while. "It doesn't look like he's shooting with as much frequency or as much opportunity as he should... Sounds like something he's been dealing with for a little bit."
As far as how the Leafs will get along without Matthews in the lineup, for what it's worth, they are 35-19-2 over the eight previous seasons in his 56 games missed.

At this morning's practice, Max Domi was elevated to play center on the top line with Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies. The second line stays the same, with John Tavares centering William Nylander and Max Pacioretty, while Pontus Holmberg draws back in to center Bobby McMann and Nick Robertson.
Matthews has five goals and 11 points thus far in 13 games this season.
