Betting Odds on Next NHL Coaches to be Fired

Now that the Detroit Red Wings have tied the can to Derek Lalonde, that makes four NHL head coaches fired this season. He joins Jim Montgomery (Boston Bruins), Drew Bannister (St. Louis Blues) and Luke Richardson (Chicago Blackhawks).

But surely, Lalonde won't be the last. There are other teams that are underperforming, fans that are unhappy, and management teams that are considering their options.

BetOnline has posted the odds for the next NHL coaches to get the pink slip, and it starts in Nashville.

At 3-2 odds (or +150), Andrew Brunette is the betting favorite to be the next coach to get his walking papers, as the team came into the season with all sorts of excitement after the Predators' splashy offseason signings of Steven StamkosJonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei. But the Preds instead find themselves in 7th place in the Central Division, at 11-17-7, and a full 11 points back of a Wild Card spot.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have gone 9-3-1 in their last 13 games, getting themselves back into a Wild Card chase (just one point back). But the team's woeful start to the season still seems to be fresh in the memories of betters, as Mike Sullivan is the second betting favorite to be fired, at 11-4 (or +275).

Patrick Roy's NY Islanders are floundering at 13-15-7, and are five points back of a playoff spot, and he comes in as the third most likely coach to get booted, at 3-1.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the betting odds is that the New York Rangers bench boss, Peter Laviolette, isn't higher. At 10-1 odds, he's 4th on the list, despite the Blueshirts 4-13-0 tailspin, as chaos reigns at Madison Square Garden.
