Canucks Rumors: Vancouver Going After Defensemen In Trade Market?

The Vancouver Canucks are facing growing pressure to address their defensive issues, amplified by Filip Hronek’s injury.

While Quinn Hughes has performed at an elite level, the rest of the blue line has struggled with consistency and puck movement, leaving the team vulnerable in key situations.

With the Canucks holding a 14-8-5 record and sitting fourth in the Pacific Division, management is weighing whether to rely on internal solutions or seek reinforcements through a trade. As Thomas Drance noted, “If there was a defender they liked at a reasonable cost, they would have had them in Vancouver yesterday.”

Speculation centers on potential trade targets like Rasmus Andersson, Marcus Pettersson, and Cam Fowler.

Andersson, under contract through next season, could command a steep price, possibly including a first-round pick. Pettersson, a pending free agent, offers a reliable defensive presence and may cost less closer to the trade deadline. Meanwhile, Fowler’s experience and term make him an intriguing option, though his $6.5 million cap hit and declining performance could deter interest unless Anaheim retains salary.

Vancouver’s preference for a defenseman with term suggests a focus on longer-term solutions rather than short-term fixes.

The Canucks have shown a willingness to act decisively in the past, as seen with last year’s acquisition of Nikita Zadorov when Carson Soucy was sidelined.

However, the trade market is competitive, with teams like Ottawa and New York also seeking defensive upgrades.

Vancouver must decide how much they are willing to spend to bolster their blue line while balancing their current playoff aspirations and future assets. Whether they strike early or remain patient, the team’s ability to secure a reliable defenseman could play a big role in maintaining their strong start and solidifying their postseason hopes.
