Flames Rumors: Analyst Links Calgary To Sam Bennett

The Calgary Flames have been linked to a potential reunion with Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett, as reported by Eric Francis of Sportsnet

Drafted fourth overall by the Flames in 2014, Bennett spent nearly seven seasons in Calgary but struggled to meet expectations, often limited to bottom-six minutes and inconsistent opportunities.

Frustrated with his role, he requested a trade and was dealt to Florida in 2021, where he revitalized his career. Since then, Bennett has become a two-time 20-goal scorer and a Stanley Cup champion, cementing his reputation as a gritty, playoff-proven center.

With Bennett set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, the Flames could reportedly consider him a target to address their need for an impact center.

Bennett’s transformation in Florida, where he shifted to center and thrived alongside players like Jonathan Huberdeau, has drawn praise from Panthers coach Paul Maurice.

“He’s a major part of our identity,” Maurice said, emphasizing Bennett’s work ethic and ability to adapt. Bennett himself reflected on his struggles in Calgary, noting, “I knew deep down I was more of a player than I ever showed in Calgary.”

The Flames’ current management, which has moved on from coach Darryl Sutter and GM Brad Treliving, could make a return more appealing for Bennett, who no longer faces the same challenges that led to his departure.

With over $19 million in projected cap space, Calgary has the financial flexibility to pursue him aggressively if he reaches free agency.

While the Panthers are expected to prioritize retaining Bennett, Francis speculates that a trade could become possible if contract negotiations stall, though Florida’s aspirations to defend their championship make such a scenario unlikely.

If Bennett does hit the open market, his connection to Calgary and established playoff pedigree position him as an ideal addition to a Flames roster seeking to return to contention.
