Flames Rumors: Update On Rasmus Andersson Trade Rumors

Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet provided a detailed update on the Calgary Flames’ evolving situation with defenseman Rasmus Andersson, whose future has sparked trade speculation despite being under contract through 2026.

Andersson has been vital for Calgary this season, leading the NHL in blocked shots with 80 and ranking second on the team in scoring with 15 points.

Steinberg described him as "arguably Calgary’s MVP this season" and emphasized the Flames’ priority to extend him.

However, he acknowledged that if Andersson expresses interest in testing free agency, the Flames might consider a trade closer to the 2026 deadline to avoid losing him without a return. "Extending players like Andersson, who the Flames drafted and developed, should be the priority," Steinberg said.

Steinberg also addressed the Flames’ goaltending situation, particularly trade rumors surrounding Dan Vladar. Vladar, part of a strong tandem with Dustin Wolf, has drawn interest around the league, but Steinberg noted that Calgary is in no rush to move him.

"The Flames know they’re dealing from a position of strength," Steinberg explained, referencing Vladar’s steady play and the team’s rumored asking price of a second-round pick.

With AHL standout Devin Cooley developing, Calgary can afford to take their time and wait for the right offer while benefiting from their current NHL duo.

Calgary’s strong defensive and goaltending performances have kept them competitive, but scoring remains an issue, with the team struggling in five-on-five production.

Injuries, including Justin Kirkland’s season-ending setback, have opened opportunities for young players like Jakob Pelletier, who recently scored his first NHL goal of the season.

Steinberg noted that this is a crucial moment for the 23-year-old, stating, “It’s not overstating it to say this could be Pelletier’s last chance to solidify himself at the highest level.”
