Insider Lists Comparable Contracts John Tavares Could Get

TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs are negotiating a contract extension with captain John Tavares, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

Tavares, completing a seven-year deal with an $11 million AAV, is expected to accept a reduced salary in his next contract.

According to Dreger, comparable deals being discussed include Anze Kopitar’s two-year extension worth $7 million AAV with the Los Angeles Kings and Claude Giroux’s three-year, $6.5 million AAV contract with the Ottawa Senators.

While Steven Stamkos’ four-year, $8 million AAV deal with the Nashville Predators has not been directly referenced, it shows the broader market for aging but productive stars. Dreger suggests that Tavares might pursue a more modest figure to stay in Toronto.

Both sides are awaiting clarity on the NHL’s salary cap, which could rise as high as $96 million next season.

This increase could influence the final terms, with the Leafs reportedly favoring a deal closer to Giroux’s structure to maintain cap flexibility.

“Every dime counts for the Maple Leafs,” noted Pierre LeBrun, emphasizing Toronto’s need to balance its budget while retaining its core players. Dreger added, “There is a mutual desire to get something done,” with Tavares prioritizing his tenure in Toronto over a higher salary elsewhere.

The timing of these discussions comes as the Leafs manage several roster challenges, including injuries to their goaltending corps and the expected return of Matt Murray after a long absence.

Around the league, teams like the Vancouver Canucks and Buffalo Sabres are exploring roster improvements ahead of the trade freeze, adding further urgency to the Maple Leafs’ decision-making.
