Insider Reveals Dallas Stars' Plan to Replace Tyler Seguin
It's a huge loss for the Dallas Stars, as Tyler Seguin's absence for the next four to six months leaves a huge void in their lineup.
But according to insider Pierre LeBrun, don't expect Dallas GM Jim Nill to rush right out to the trade market to replace Seguin, who just underwent his hip surgery today.
For now, what Jim Nill has said, is that they want to look internally for trying to fill the void. So Logan Stankoven, for example, is the one that took Seguin's spot in their last game on the line with Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment, which has been outstanding this year. Rookie Maverik Bourque, who's on the fourth line, he'll probably get a bigger opportunity as time goes on.
But he then goes to surmise that as the calendar changes, and the Stars get a better idea on a more clear timeline for Seguin to return, he can see the Nill wanting to use that money that's now on the LTIR ($9.8M cap hit) on a big addition.
As for the internal candidates, Stankoven has 16 points in 24 games in his first full season with the Stars, after the second-round pick had a nice cameo last season with six goals and 14 points in 23 games, with a plus/minus rating of +10.
Bourque was a first-round pick in the 2020 Draft, and is getting his first extended look this season at the NHL level. In 10:52 ice time per night, he has four points in 20 games. He had a very strong season with the Texas Stars of the AHL last year, with 77 points in 71 games, while adding 11 points in 7 playoff games.
The Stars are off to a nice start, at 16-9-0, and in third place in the top-heavy Central Division.
