Insider: St. Louis Blues "Would Like To Move" Brandon Saad
While Cam Fowler made his debut for the St. Louis Blues Saturday night following their trade acquisition of the veteran defenseman, Blues forward Brandon Saad is trending in the other direction, a healthy scratch in that game, and now, according to insider Elliotte Friedman, soon to be on his way out of St. Louis.
He's a two-time Stanley Cup champion, and the Blues would like to move him. He's got a no trade clause, but I've been told he's willing to consider some other options.
With Saad's full no-trade clause converting to a modified one at a 12-team NTC after the season, the Blues will have to work with him, but it sounds like he's amenable to finding other destinations.
The 32-year-old has seven 20+ goal seasons in his 14-year career, and in four seasons with the Blues, he had averaged about 40 points a season, while scoring 26 goals last season. This year, however, his production has declined significantly, with just four goals and 10 points in 27 games. He's averaging under 15 minutes of ice time per night for the first time in his career.
Saad was part of two Cup winners while with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015.
With another season to go on his $4.5 million cap hit, it remains to be seen if the Blues can work out a trade with his blessing and whether they'll have to retain some of that salary.
