Jets Rumors: Winnipeg Could Enter Trade Market With One Upgrade In Mind

The Winnipeg Jets are off to an impressive start this season, emerging as Stanley Cup contenders with elite defense, improved special teams, and strong goaltending from Connor Hellebuyck.

Despite their success, there is room to strengthen the roster, particularly on the blue line.

According to Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe of The Winnipeg Free Press, the Jets could target a big, puck-moving defenseman to solidify their defensive core for a deep playoff run.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko is an appealing option, offering a right-handed shot, size, and skill at the top-pairing level. However, Parayko’s no-movement clause and $6.5 million annual cap hit through 2029 make a potential trade complex.

Seattle Kraken’s Jamie Oleksiak is another viable candidate who could add physicality and size against heavier opponents.

General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has shown a willingness to make impactful trade deadline moves in previous playoff years, acquiring players like Paul Stastny and Nino Niederreiter.

With over $11 million in projected cap space at the deadline, the Jets have significant flexibility to pursue both a defenseman and a versatile forward.

McIntyre notes that adding depth is crucial to preparing for the intensity of playoff hockey, writing, “You can never have enough depth.”

A focus on bolstering the blue line and forward group could position the Jets to compete against the league’s top teams in the postseason.

Maintaining their defensive structure has been key to Winnipeg’s early success, and Wiebe believes this commitment will be vital in avoiding another first-round playoff exit.

He emphasizes that “winning a playoff series requires stars to shine, complementary players to step up, and elite goaltending.”

With their core group performing at a high level, the Jets are in an excellent position to make strategic moves in the trade market to enhance their chances for a deep playoff run.
