Maple Leafs Get Terrible News on Anthony Stolarz

In the past few days, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz has gone from 'day-to-day' to being placed on injured reserve, and now, even worse news, as the team announces that he'll be out four-to-six weeks.

An MRI has revealed "a pebble" in Stolarz's knee, and he'll be on the shelf until at least the second half of January, or even into February. He'll have a procedure on Wednesday to remove the loose body from his knee.

It's a huge loss for the team, as Stolarz has been exceptional in the nets this season in his first year with the Leafs, posting an NHL-best .927 save percentage with a 2.15 goals-against average in 17 starts.

Joseph Woll will now resume taking on the bulk of the starts, but Toronto fans are holding their breath, as they know all too well that Woll has had his share of injury troubles himself.

The injury to Stolarz comes at a terrible time in the schedule for the Buds, who have three back-to-backs in their next 10 games, which covers the condensed span of just 18 days. They'll have to keep a close eye on Woll's workload, so that he doesn't fall into one of his own injury traps.

The thought is that third-stringer Matt Murray could even get a chance to make his NHL return for the first time since 2023.
