NHL Rumors: Insider Links Mikael Granlund To Atlantic Division Team

The Boston Bruins have emerged as a potential suitor for San Jose Sharks forward Mikael Granlund ahead of the NHL trade deadline, according to Craig Button of TSN

With the Bruins struggling to replace Patrice Bergeron’s offensive production following his retirement, Granlund makes an attractive target.

Button described Granlund as a "fantastic center capable of helping fill the void," emphasizing his ability to contribute at both center and wing. Granlund enjoyed a strong season for the Sharks last year, producing 60 points in 69 games.

He's off to a red-hot start this season as well, racking up 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 total points across 25 games played.

Acquiring Granlund would not be without challenges, as the Bruins have limited cap space, requiring the Sharks to retain salary or take back contracts.

Potential pieces such as Morgan Geekie or Trent Frederic could help balance the financials, but Button speculated that San Jose may seek a high-value asset like top prospect Matthew Poitras.

While Bruins GM Don Sweeney is unlikely to part with Poitras, Granlund’s ability to elevate Boston’s offensive depth and versatility as a veteran forward keeps the possibility alive.

Granlund’s $5 million cap hit and pending UFA status further complicate negotiations, but his impact could justify the cost for a team aiming for a deep playoff run.

Granlund’s leadership and reliability have made him one of San Jose’s key players this season, with Button noting his role as both a top performer and mentor to younger teammates like William Eklund.

However, with the Sharks focusing on the future, they may be inclined to move the 31-year-old forward to acquire assets.

For the Bruins, adding Granlund represents an opportunity to address their scoring woes while gaining a proven playmaker capable of playing in all situations.
