NHL Trade Rumors: Oilers Linked To Two Defensemen

Allan Mitchell of The Athletic has linked defensemen Henri Jokiharju of the Buffalo Sabres and J.J. Moser of the Tampa Bay Lightning as potential trade targets for the Edmonton Oilers as the team looks to solidify its blue line.

Oilers GM Stan Bowman recently addressed the team’s midseason plans, stating, “From Games 40 to 50 is when we’re going to try to really decide which type of player would be the best one to add. If we can add a defenceman, we’d like to.”

Both Jokiharju and Moser fit the Oilers’ need for a puck-moving, top-four defenseman capable of logging significant minutes against elite competition.

Jokiharju, 25, offers over 350 NHL games of experience and a $3.1 million cap hit, making him an affordable option for Edmonton's playoff aspirations.

Known for his strong skating and passing, Jokiharju could pair effectively with Darnell Nurse or Mattias Ekholm. However, as an impending free agent, Edmonton would likely need assurances of a contract extension before pulling the trigger on a trade, which could require parting with assets like AHL winger Matt Savoie or OHL defenseman Beau Akey.

On the other hand, 24-year-old Moser is excelling with the Lightning, often skating alongside Victor Hedman.

His $3.375 million cap hit and contract through next season make him an enticing option for Edmonton’s long-term plans, though Tampa Bay’s reliance on him might make a deal challenging.

Mitchell emphasized the trade-offs between the two players.

Jokiharju provides an immediate upgrade for a playoff push but comes with short-term uncertainties, while Moser offers potential impact for years to come at a likely higher cost.
