Report: Canucks Tried To Acquire Brock Nelson Last Year

The New York Islanders find themselves in a tricky spot this season, with veteran center Brock Nelson emerging as a significant trade candidate amid the team’s struggles.

Nelson, 33, has been a model of consistency, recording three consecutive 30-goal seasons and continuing his strong form with 10 goals so far in the 2024-25 campaign.

Despite his contributions, the Islanders sit outside the playoff picture with a 9-10-6 record, raising questions about the future of their aging roster.

With Nelson in the final year of his $6 million contract, his name has resurfaced in trade discussions, particularly as injuries to key players like Mathew Barzal and Adam Pelech have compounded the team’s rough start.

The Vancouver Canucks remain one of the most interested suitors, having made a strong push to acquire Nelson at last season’s trade deadline, according to Jim Biringer of RG.org.

While the Islanders opted to keep him for their playoff push, Vancouver’s efforts showed his value as a skilled, versatile center with scoring touch and playoff experience.

Now, with the Canucks contending in the Pacific Division and still seeking depth at center, Nelson presents an ideal target.

If the Islanders retain salary, his cap hit becomes even more attractive, and his combination of offensive production and defensive reliability aligns perfectly with Vancouver’s postseason aspirations.

As the NHL trade deadline draws near, Nelson’s availability could drive a lot of interest from multiple contending teams, with the Canucks likely to revisit their pursuit.

For the Islanders, moving Nelson would signal a shift toward a retool, potentially ending GM Lou Lamoriello’s steadfast “win-now” approach.
