Report: Islanders Could Make GM Change Soon

The New York Islanders may be headed for a big shake-up in management as speculation mounts about the future of general manager Lou Lamoriello, as noted by David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.

With his contract expiring and ownership reportedly frustrated by the team’s lack of improvement, insiders suggest Lamoriello’s tenure could end if the Islanders fail to make the playoffs.

After reaching the Eastern Conference Final in 2020 and 2021, the team has struggled to return to that level, retaining an aging core while making few impactful roster upgrades. Despite key players like Mathew Barzal, Bo Horvat, and Noah Dobson, the Islanders have been unable to consistently compete at a high level, even as they prepare to host the 2026 NHL All-Star Game.

Tensions between Lamoriello and head coach Patrick Roy have added to the uncertainty.

Following a 6-3 loss to the Boston Bruins, Roy remarked, “This is the team Lou gave me, and I’m going to work extremely hard for these guys,” a statement that many saw as a subtle jab at Lamoriello’s roster construction.

Although Roy denied any rift, insiders like Dave Pagnotta believe friction between the two is growing. Meanwhile, injuries to key players such as Barzal and Adam Pelech have hampered the team, but many within the organization feel that these issues alone cannot justify the Islanders’ underperformance this season.

If the Islanders fall short of the playoffs, Lamoriello’s departure seems increasingly likely.

Ownership has reportedly discussed replacing him since last season, and trade rumors involving veterans like Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri suggest a possible shake-up if the team falls out of contention.

However, Lamoriello is expected to resist selling unless absolutely necessary. With an aging roster and limited young talent coming through the pipeline, ownership may look for fresh leadership to retool the roster and restore the Islanders to contender status.
