Report: NY Rangers Could Flip Will Borgen In Another Trade
The New York Rangers will likely resume their shake up if their season continues to go down the drain (4-13-0 in the last 17 games going into this weekend's action).
They've already shipped out their captain, Jacob Trouba, and their one-time 2nd overall selection in the Draft, Kaapo Kakko. The return in the Kakko trade with the Seattle Kraken was big, physical defenseman Will Borgen.
But the 28-year-old Borgen is a pending unrestricted free agent, and if the Rangers don't right the ship at MSG, Borgen could get flipped in another trade, as noted by insiders Pierre LeBrun and Chris Johnston at The Athletic.
Two teams have already been pegged as good fits for the 6'3" right-shot D, if the Rangers take that route.
LeBrun suggests the Florida Panthers would be an ideal fit, as they're looking for a physical, right-shot D, and a rental, and in this case, whose $2.7 million cap hit—and the associated asking price in a trade—"won’t break the bank."
Johnston suggests that the huge void left on the right side of the Vancouver Canucks blueline after the extended loss of Filip Hronek would make them an interested suitor and a good landing spot for Borgen.
"The stay-at-home defender is a good skater who should be able to step into a second pairing on a team (like Vancouver) and brings the kind of size teams view as an added plus come playoff time. Borgen will have plenty of suitors ahead of the deadline, but there may not be anyone more motivated to pursue him than Vancouver," writes Johnston.
The six-year veteran can also kill penalties, another skill the Canucks are looking for.
For now, though, Borgen is playing 17:35 a night in his three games thus far with the Blueshirts, handing out 10 hits. We'll see if they decide to turn him around for another asset.
