Report: Oilers Looking to Extend Ty Emberson

When the Edmonton Oilers traded Cody Ceci for the younger and much cheaper Ty Emberson in August, many just figured it was more of a salary dump move to make room to re-sign the recently offer-sheeted Philip Broberg. That, of course, did not happen.

But it turns out that Emberson has earned his stripes on the Oilers blueline, and is now playing a key role for them as a legit top-six D-man, plus time on the penalty killing unit. With that, insider Elliotte Friedman suggests on his 32 Thoughts podcast that an extension should be on the way soon for the 24-year-old.

A bit of a slow start, but... Emberson is playing very well, and I would not be surprised to see Emberson and the Oilers engage (in contract talks) and work on trying to get something done not long after Jan. 1st.

The one issue that Friedman noted that was in question for Emberson when he arrived in Edmonton was that he was "a quiet guy, and had never played in a 'noisy market' before." Turns out, all it took was some time for him to adjust and get comfortable, and that's where he is now.

"The last couple of years I've played in San Jose or Arizona where it doesn't feel as much like hockey season," Emberson said recently. "But here, you get snowstorms and cold and it feels like hockey season." Emberson is from Wisconsin, so he knows all about what hockey season 'feels like.'

Head coach Kris Knoblauch coached Emberson in the AHL a couple of years back, so he was well aware of what the right-shot D could do, noting his defense-first mentality.

At 34 games played with the Oilers this season, he's already topped his previous career games mark, which sat at just 30, last season with the Sharks.

Emberson is playing out a $950,000 one-year deal, and it sounds like the 2018 third-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes is about to earn a raise and an extension.
