Sharks Rumors: Another goalie trade coming before trade deadline

The San Jose Sharks aren't finished just yet.

There's growing speculation that after the Sharks dealt Mackenzie Blackwood to the Colorado Avalanche, that the team is looking to now move one of Alexandar Georgiev or Vitek Vanecek.

The team has been very impressed with 22-year-old Yaroslav Askarov's development this season, posting a 8-3-1 record in the AHL, along with a .946 save percentage, meanwhile Askarov got a taste of the NHL earlier this season, going 1-0-1 with the Sharks, with a .927 save percentage.

Both Georgiev and Vanecek are pending unrestricted free agents. Vanecek is owed $3.4 million against the cap, meanwhile the Sharks were able to get the Avalanche to retain 14% of Georgiev's contract, leaving GM Mike Grier with a $2.9 million cap hit against the Sharks' books.

With the Sharks open for business in the midst of another rebuilding season, it's likely Vanecek ends up being the next goaltender moved, with Georgiev a solid mentor for Askarov moving forward.

The Sharks are 10-15-5 on the year, and currently sit near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The team has $8 million in current cap space and close to $25 million in deadline cap space, so there's no doubt Grier will try to leverage some of this to improve his hockey club heading into the 2025-26 season.
