TRADE: Jacob Trouba Dealt Out West

The Jacob Trouba Drama is coming to a close, as he has been traded by the New York Rangers to the Anaheim Ducks.

Insiders Pierre LeBrun reveals that the Rangers will not retain a single dollar on the Trouba, who has one more year remaining after this one, at an $8 million cap hit. The Ducks take on the full contract.

The return for New York is depth defenseman Urho Vaakanainen and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2025. Vaakanainen was actually a first-round pick back in 2017, but never has adjusted fully to the NHL game, and had spent most of his time in the AHL until last season when he played 68 games with Anaheim.

An additional report had the Columbus Blue Jackets in on Trouba as well, as GM Don Waddell confirmed today that he'd had discussions with Rangers GM Chris Drury, but that was nixed when Trouba refused to waive his NTC as Columbus was on his no-trade list.

It all works out to a massive salary dump for the Rangers, who lop $8 million off their cap hit for this season and next. In combination with the waiving of Barclay Goodrow last June, the Blueshirts have found themselves $11.6 million lighter in cap space.

Drury had been trying to convince Trouba to accept a trade since June, but he was set on remaining in New York City for the season, as his wife has a year left on her medical residency at a New York hospital.

Looks like the two will now have to do a little commuting for a while.
