Arthur Kaliyev Claimed By Marquee Team

One benefit of being a struggling team near the bottom of the standings is having a better shot at claiming a player off waivers. Surely, the New York Rangers don’t see their current predicament as a positive thing, but it has allowed them to claim Arthur Kaliyev today off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings.

The former second-round pick was never able to truly establish himself with the Kings, and was relegated mostly to fourth-line minutes. This season, he hasn't played a game in the NHL after recovering from a preseason injury and going through a conditioning stint in the AHL.

The Rangers are obviously hoping they can help Kaliyev reach his potential. Jonny Lazarus of Daily Faceoff provides this scouting report on the 23-year-old out of Uzbekistan:

"Shot first mentality, talk about a natural goal-scorer. He's got a sneaky high ceiling, two years ago, he was a half a point-per-game player with his minutes cut. That's a low-risk high-ceiling pickup. I think that could work out really well for the Rangers."

The Blueshirts, of course, are looking for anything to help snap them out of their funk this season. The team currently finds itself in 7th spot in the Metropolitan division, with the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference.
