Avalanche Rumors: Is Gabriel Landeskog Nearing A Return For Colorado?

Gabriel Landeskog’s potential comeback for the Colorado Avalanche is one of the NHL’s most anticipated narratives, as fans and analysts alike wonder if the team captain can return after knee cartilage transplant surgery in 2022.

Landeskog, last seen in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, has faced a grueling recovery process, with persistent knee swelling preventing him from practicing on consecutive days. “Until we see a two or three-week stretch where he’s an everyday participant in practice, that’s how you’ll know he’s getting close,” said NHL insider Frank Seravalli.

The rare nature of his surgery, combined with the demands of an NHL season, leaves a lot of doubt about his ability to make a full return.

Despite the setbacks, there is cautious optimism within the Avalanche organization and from Landeskog himself, who remains determined to play again. “He’s doing really well right now,” head coach Jared Bednar said in December, though he admitted uncertainty about a timeline for his return.

Analysts like Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period believe the Avalanche’s strong season allows the team to be patient, recently saying, “They’ve won six straight. They don’t need him right now. So, we’ll save him for the playoffs.”

Landeskog’s occasional appearances at team skates and improved form have sparked hope, but no concrete signs of sustained progress have emerged.

For the Avalanche, Landeskog’s return could be an emotional and strategic boost, even if limited to a playoff run, drawing comparisons to Steven Stamkos’s dramatic one-game return in 2020.

Fans dream of seeing him reunited with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen on the top line, but with no clear resolution in sight and 41 games left in the regular season, questions persist.
