Blue Jackets Rumors: Insider Gives Update On Ivan Provorov Trade Rumors

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic has provided new details on the Columbus Blue Jackets' situation with defenseman Ivan Provorov, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Acquired in a three-way trade with the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers last year, the 28-year-old has become a crucial piece of Columbus’ blue line, logging 23:25 of ice time per game, second only to Zach Werenski.

Provorov has expressed openness to signing a long-term extension, and his agent, Mark Gandler, has already engaged in preliminary talks with Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell. However, Provorov is reportedly seeking an eight-year deal with a raise over his current $6.75 million AAV, which could complicate negotiations.

LeBrun reports that the Blue Jackets face a big decision ahead of the March 7 trade deadline. If no agreement is reached, Columbus could explore trading Provorov, particularly if a first-round pick is offered by a playoff-bound team.

"If the sides can’t agree to an extension... I believe they would prioritize the bigger picture and deal him," LeBrun wrote, emphasizing the defenseman’s strong market value as a reliable top-four option for contenders.

Provorov’s desire to remain in Columbus, bolstered by his brother Vladimir joining Ohio State’s hockey program, is a positive factor.

The coming weeks will determine whether Provorov solidifies his role as a cornerstone of the team or becomes a high-value trade chip for a Stanley Cup contender.
