Devils' Jacob Markstrom out 4-to-6 weeks, to miss 4 Nations Face Off

The New Jersey Devils announced goaltender Jacob Markstrom is out four-to-six weeks with a lower-body injury, which is actually fortunate news for the hockey club, but disappointing news for Team Sweden. Markstrom won't be available to play at next month's 4 Nations Face Off.

Markstrom, 34, has appeared in 36 games this season, posting a 21-9-5 record, along with a 2.20 goals against average, and .912 save percentage. With Markstrom unavailable, look for veteran backup Jake Allen to carry the load in the Devils' crease.

Per the Devils release: He will miss the remainder of the club’s games leading into the Four Nations break. He will begin a rehab program under the guidance of the Devils’ athlete care staff.

Markstrom left Wednesday night's game against the Boston Bruins in the first period after Bruins Justin Brazeau crashed into Markstrom's net, sending the Devils goaltender awkwardly into his goal post.

Markstrom lay facedown on the ice in clear discomfort, and the team athletic therapist tended to him. Although he appeared to have difficulty raising himself off the ice, using the crossbar of his net for support, Markstrom eventually skated off on his own.

With Linus Ullmark for the Ottawa Senators also dealing with injury concerns, the Swedish goaltending depth heading into February's tournament just got a little dicey, in a blink of an eye.
