Devils Rumors: New Jersey Looking To Johnathan Kovacevic To Long-Term Extension

The New Jersey Devils are making it a priority to secure defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic with a long-term contract extension as he approaches unrestricted free agency in 2025.

Since being acquired from the Montreal Canadiens last summer for a 2026 fourth-round pick, Kovacevic has emerged as a critical piece of the Devils’ blue line.

At 6-foot-5 and 223 pounds, he has brought size, grit, and defensive reliability to a team that sought to become harder to play against.

“His reach, size, and just the style he plays don’t leave much room for the opponent,” General Manager Tom Fitzgerald said. “He’s come in and provided exactly what we needed to transform our identity.”

Kovacevic’s presence has bolstered the Devils’ defensive depth and brought a physical edge that has complemented players like Dougie Hamilton and Brett Pesce.

His performance this season, which includes one goal, 12 assists, a +14 plus/minus rating, and consistent defensive play over 49 games, has been very solid.

Fitzgerald credited Kovacevic for his impact on the younger roster, stating, “He was one of the players we identified who could help us contend, and it’s been an excellent match for the team and the player.”

Kovacevic has also taken on a mentoring role, helping develop rising talents like Luke Hughes while solidifying his position as a dependable force on the ice.

Securing Kovacevic could, however, create ripple effects within the Devils’ roster.

Top defensive prospect Simon Nemec, the 2022 second-overall pick, has expressed frustration over limited NHL opportunities and could become a trade candidate if Kovacevic signs a long-term deal.

Nemec recently told Dennik Sport, “I believe I’ve proven I belong in the NHL. I just have to wait for another chance.”
