Flames Rumors: Dan Vladar Wants Contract Extension

Calgary Flames goaltender Dan Vladar is eager to sign a contract extension and remain with the team that gave him his first NHL opportunity.

Speaking with Sportsnet, the 27-year-old expressed his commitment to Calgary, saying, "This is the team that gave me the opportunity to play in the NHL, and I just don’t want to leave."

Earning $2.2 million annually, Vladar has shared the crease this season with rookie standout Dustin Wolf, taking on more challenging assignments like back-to-back games and matchups against top teams. While his 3.20 goals-against average and .890 save percentage trail Wolf’s numbers, Vladar has provided stability and allowed the rookie to adjust gradually to the NHL.

Flames GM Craig Conroy praised Vladar’s contributions to the team, noting his role in fostering competition and mentoring Wolf. "They push each other," Conroy said, describing the tandem’s dynamic as beneficial for both goalies and the team’s overall performance.

Vladar’s presence has been especially important in helping Wolf navigate the transition to the NHL while maintaining consistency during tough stretches.

With AHL standout Devin Cooley signed to a one-way contract for next season, the Flames face a tough decision about their goaltending depth and the financial feasibility of extending Vladar.

Few goalies are typically moved at the trade deadline, making an extension a realistic possibility for both sides. Conroy acknowledged that any new deal would need to align with the team’s long-term plans, but Vladar’s experience, relationship with Wolf, and desire to stay in Calgary make him a valuable piece as the Flames push for the playoffs.

"Going back and forth has been really good for us," Conroy added, reinforcing the importance of Vladar’s role in the team’s success.
