Flyers GM Addresses Future of 4 Key RFAs

In his mid-season media briefing, Philadelphia Flyers GM Danny Briere has addressed the future of four key restricted free agents—Cam York, Noah Cates, Tyson Foerster and Morgan Frost. And while the latter has been on trade boards around the NHL, and is likely on thin ice in Philly, the other three should be re-signed, though there's nothing on that front at this point.

Briere said there have been no negotiations on extensions as of yet, and he said "it's an ongoing evaluation of those guys." But he did add that he expects all four of them to be part of the plan beyond this season.

Anthony DiMarco of Daily Faceoff reports that the team has "a ballpark idea for each player’s next contract" when negotiations do begin, and "frameworks" are being worked out internally.

The 24-year-old York is in line for a nice pay raise, this year playing 21:31 per night, with 11 points in 33 games and a plus/minus rating of +1. He's wrapping up a two-year, $3.2 million AAV deal, and DiMarco expects to see a huge 6-to-8 year long-term deal for York, somewhere in the $6M-$7M range.

Up front, both Cates and Foerster are showing nice signs of development. Cates, in particular, is a Tortorella favorite, and DiMarco reports that the Flyers "are prepared to go in the four or five-year range with Cates should the money make sense". At that term, he'd be due for a slight bump up from his $2.625M AAV.

Foerster's next deal could be a shorter-term bridge deal.

As mentioned, Frost is iffy, however, as the former first-rounder is not developing as well as the team would have hoped. He has 11 goals this season and 24 points in 43 games, while seeing his time on ice shaved to its lowest total in three years, at 15:06.
