Insider: Canucks Holding Up The Trade Market

The Vancouver Canucks are holding up the NHL trade market as teams across the league await clarity on the futures of J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson.

According to Chris Johnston of TSN, the Canucks' decision-making has created a ripple effect, with general manager Patrik Allvin reportedly open to offers for both players but yet to finalize a deal.

Johnston described the situation as one where "no other business is getting done in the meantime," with the uncertainty surrounding two high-profile names causing a standstill for other teams preparing their trade strategies.

Miller, 31, is viewed as the more likely trade candidate, given his age and the Canucks’ potential preference to build around the younger Pettersson.

"There’s a sense league-wide that J.T. Miller is the more likely to be moved," Johnston said, though his no-movement clause and contract could complicate negotiations.

Pettersson, at 26, remains a cornerstone for Vancouver, but his $11.6 million cap hit and limited trade protection until next season narrow his pool of potential suitors.

Both players have drawn considerable interest, adding pressure on Vancouver to decide their long-term direction.

The broader trade market remains in a holding pattern as teams await the Canucks’ next move.

Johnston explained that Vancouver’s deliberations are influencing both buyers and sellers, particularly in the Eastern Conference, where a tight wild-card race already adds complexity.
