Insider Drops Big Update On Jake Evans' Future with Canadiens

One of the Montreal Canadiens' impending unrestricted free agents, forward Jake Evans has been mentioned as a possible trade target. But according to a report from TVA Sports Habs insider Renaud Lavoie, "a marriage is coming" between the two sides.

Lavoie sees a long-term contract extension on the horizon.

I don't know when, I don't know the date, but there's a wedding coming up to make sure Jake stays in the organization.

He even suggests that a near doubling of the young forward's salary could be in order:

The salary cap is going to continue to go up. There are still people who say in two years it will be $100 million. Over three years, if you give Evans $1.5 million more, nobody is going to cry.

The former 7th rounder (2014 NHL Draft) is having a career year on the strength of a tremendous December, in which he recorded six goals and six assists in 14 games with a plus/minus rating of +9. Overall, with 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in 39 games, Evans is on pace to blow away his previous career highs of 13 goals and 29 points. And that's not to mention his strong play on the penalty-killing unit.

The Habs have several other trade candidates on the roster, but from this report, it doesn't seem like Evans will be going anywhere.

He's currently playing out the final season of his three-year, $1.7M AAV deal.
